IELTS™ is a recognised standard for entry into Education in much of the English-speaking world. It is accepted by over 10,000 organisations globally. Attainment of an IELTS band score is often a pre-requisite for entry to education, though there may be the alternative of undertaking other forms of assessment.

In relation to the band score required this varies from Institution to Institution, many good colleges will require an overall band score between band 5 and band 7. This will vary, depending upon the view of the educational establishment, and the level of the course for which entry is required.

For example, Oxford University requires a band 7 overall, and in each module. This will normally be the upper end of requirements, though one or two US institutions prefer even a level 8 for the speaking module. However, as explained, the range of band 5 to band 7 covers the majority:

What these Band Scores Represent:

Band 9:

Expert user: has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.

Band 8:

Very good user: has fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.

Band 7:

Good user: has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings in some situations. In General, handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

Band 6:

Competent user: has generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand quite complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

Band 5:

Modest user: has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field.
